HUGE EVENT! >>> "CITIES AND CITIZENSHIP"

Cities and Citizenship is a three-day symposium that explores how the design of cities can promote a more engaged citizenry. The symposium will engage leading designers, architects, landscape architects, planners, urbanists, historians, and scientists.


A pervasive absence of decisive political action on climate change, despite a rich trove of knowledge about its potentially dangerous consequences since at least the 1970s, combined with the failure of successive global summits to reach adequate resolution affects us all. Where do design and environmentalism cross over to make an impact on these issues? Along with the scientific aspects of ecological design, we are interested to explore the intersection between design and the social sciences at large by explicating the concept of “city” and “citizen” in parallel. What is the relationship between city making and citizenship? Can design provide new and richer tools for strengthening citizenship and advancing human rights and responsibilities?


Cities and Citizenship is co-sponsored by the Goethe-Institut New York, Parsons The New School for Design, NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study and Global Design NYU.


Cities and Citizenship is organized by Alissa Burmeister from the Goethe-Institut New York, Ioanna Theocharopoulou from Parsons The New School for Design, Peder Anker, Louise Harpman, Mitchell Joachim, from Global Design NYU at Gallatin School of Individualized Study, New York University, and is part of the Goethe-Institut's international Weltstadt: Who Creates the City? initiative.
